Dating Pool Statistics by State

National probabilities are only half the story. These estimates show how many of the 56.41 million US women aged 18-44 live in each state, plus the education and marriage statistics that shape the local dating pool.

    Key takeaways

    Biggest and smallest pools

California has an estimated 6.82 million women aged 18-44, about 12.6% of the national total. Vermont has about 94,000. The five largest states (California, Texas, New York, Florida, Illinois) together hold 39.6% of the pool.

    Youngest and oldest states

Utah has the lowest median age at 31.3, while Maine is the oldest at 44.8. Older states have proportionally fewer women in the 18-44 range for the same total population.

    Education

63% of women 25 and older in District of Columbia hold a bachelor's degree or higher, against 23% in West Virginia (population-weighted average across states: 36%). An education filter therefore removes far fewer people in the top states than the national math suggests.

    Never married

55% of adult women in District of Columbia have never married, versus 25% in Utah (weighted average: 36%). Marriage timing, not just age, drives the gap.

    How to use these numbers

The calculators return a national probability: the share of US adults who match every filter you choose. Multiply that share by a state's estimated women aged 18-44 to get a rough local count. Preferences matching 1% of US women work out to about 68,190 women in California and about 940 in Vermont. Adjust up or down for filters where a state differs from the national average, such as education or marital status.

Estimates combine 2023 Census Bureau state population figures with American Community Survey age, sex, education, and marital status distributions, rounded to the nearest thousand. They are for statistical comparison, not exact headcounts. See our methodology and data sources.

    Frequently asked questions

California has the largest pool by far, with an estimated 6.8 million women aged 18-44 - about one in eight US women in that age range. Texas (about 5.6 million), New York, and Florida (each about 3.4 million) follow. Large pools do not guarantee better odds for any one preference, but they mean more absolute matches at the same percentage.

Each estimate starts from the 2023 US Census Bureau state population figures and applies American Community Survey distributions for age, sex, education, and marital status. Counts are rounded to the nearest thousand and are meant for statistical comparison, not as exact headcounts.

Multiply your national probability by your state's estimated women aged 18-44. A result of 1% in a state with 1,000,000 women in that range means roughly 10,000 matches. State education and marriage rates shift the real figure: a state with an above-average bachelor's rate will have more matches for an education filter than the national math suggests.

Never-married shares track urbanization, college attainment, and how early people marry - not just age. Dense, highly educated places lead: about 55% of adult women in DC and 42% in New York have never married. Utah is the youngest state yet has the lowest rate (about 25%), alongside Idaho and Wyoming, because people there tend to marry earlier.
